ACT! Service Packs and Hotfix patches are released by Sage as free ACT! updates to resolve known issues, provide workarounds or to introduce new functions.
Please note: Unless configured by Preact the installation of ACT! service packs and hotfixes are carried out at your own risk. Please contact us if you'd ike to arrange for this work to be carried out by our technicians or if you have any questions about this process.
The items listed below are our recommendations and considerations for actions that should be performed before updates are applied.
Take a database back-up
Before installing the latest update you should take a full back up of all your active ACT database(s). This will enable you to revert back to your original database build should any subsequently issues arise that cannot be resolved.
The only supported ACT! database back-up's are those created within the ACT! application or by using the ACT! scheduler.
All remote ACT! databases should be synchronised prior to back-up.
Important: The only supported method of restoring your database to a previous working installation is from a backup.
Please contact us if you are unsure of the procedure to take an ACT! database back-up.
Ensure Build Consistency
Where ACT! is shared between multiple users all machines in a shared or synchronising environment must update to the same build version.
New service pack releases and hotfixes should be concurrently applied to all ACT! server and client installations.
The current ACT! build can be checked by opening the 'About ACT!' screen in the ACT! Help menu.
Service Pack (SP) level consistency
A hotfix is related to a service pack so these updates should only be applied if you have already installed the associated ACT! service pack.
For example, a hotfix for build v.xx.0.2.xxx should not be applied to installations of v.xx.0.1.xxx and earlier editions.
Latest Service Pack instead of multiple hotfixes
If multiple hotfixes need to be applied and Sage have retrospectively included these updates in a new service pack release you should apply the latest service pack instead of installing individual hotfixes, unless issues relating to the latest service pack may cause the server to break.
Applying updates on a 'needs only' basis
Sage ACT! service packs and hotfixes are not mandatory unless they address priority performance problems that are specific to any issues you may be encountering.
ACT! updates can be applied on an 'as-needed' basis but we recommend the ACT! software build should not be more than two service packs behind the latest version release.
Please contact us if you have any questions, or if you require advice before applying an ACT! software update.
